Be a Lover, Not a (Blog) Hater

IMG_1299

I've recently realized that some of my friends and loved ones are...how shall I put this? Blog haters.  (You know who you are but you probably don’t know that I know who you are since you are not likely to be reading this post.) I discovered this at lunch the other day when a colleague quipped that he does not read my posts in real time (Gasp!); at a family gathering when a friend declared that he does not follow blogs (I covered my youngest child’s ears.); and on a street corner where a stranger looked at me incredulously when I asked whether she’d heard of DosGildas.com (Kidding.).  I guess I assumed all of my colleagues, Facebook friends and family members—okay, all of humanity—would have signed up as Dos Gildas followers by now, three weeks out of the gate. Am I a blogging narcissist with unrealistic expectations? Are the blog haters in my life justified in their … [Read more...]

A Moment of Madness

If you are one of the 291 visitors (as of this posting) who has visited this site since the start, you may have noticed that we’ve changed the subtitle at the top of this blog. It used to read: We are two Gildas and we are writing a cookbook and documenting every step—from inception to publication! Then while at my computer tonight, eating Chinese with one hand and tweaking font sizes with the other, it hit me. We can’t say “from inception to publication!” It’s not like we have a book deal! Neither of us has blogged for more than a few weeks out of our lives! Who are we kidding? I’ll change it to “inception and beyond!” But then all I could hear in my head was the 1980s Madness song One Step Beyond! So, I pared it down. We are just going to document, make a record and have some fun. Maybe even create a little buzz, if we’re lucky. … [Read more...]

Getting Started…

IMG_0232

Last week my goddaughter, Gilda Claudine, called me excitedly to talk about sitting down to write a cookbook. I should have been taken by surprise, I suppose. While we both adore the whole ritual that surrounds food and its preparation, we certainly had never discussed this. I am a teacher and she is a lawyer...the dedication we put into our respective professions leaves us with barely enough time for our families let alone a project such as what Gilda Claudine envisioned. But...until she called me, what Gilda Claudine didn't know is that I had been sending her telepathic vibes about this for years! It took awhile, but she finally received the messages.  (I'll explain later!) The next few years we will be running on pure synergy, the conviction that we have ideas about food and its importance in raising a family or simply in enriching our lives. My name is Gilda Valdez Carbonaro. I … [Read more...]

My grandmother

When I was a young girl, I spent summers living with my grandmother in Laredo, Texas.  I called her “Abue” and she called me all sorts of pet names: Míja, Mi vida, Estrella más bella, Corazon. Laredo is desert hot and I remember how she would wipe her mouth before doling out sweaty kisses.  She often sang to me when we rode in the car together or while I waited for a meal at her kitchen table.   She was the quintessential networker and knew nearly everyone in town.  I know this because she took me with her on all sorts of errands: to shop at the market, to drop the car at the mechanic, to pay her respects to her who owed her a few dollars. Laredo, Texas in the 70s. In those days, she ran a pensión downtown in Laredo’s business district.  We, the family, used to refer to it as el hotel, because her customers were people who traveled from the interior of … [Read more...]

The Big Idea

IMG_1252

I’m not exactly sure when the idea for this project took form in my mind, but it was not long ago.  A matter of weeks, really.  I experienced the idea as a subconscious simulcast transmitting to both my mind and my mouth;  the memory of birthing the idea is fused with my phone call to Gilda V.C. one December morning.  It went something like this: Me: “Gilda, we should write a bilingual cookbook together of our grandmothers’ recipes.  We can blog about it.  Think Julie and Julia meets Like Water for Chocolate.  What do you think?” Gilda V.C.:  “I’ll do it!  I’ll do it!” And so our project and partnership were born. … [Read more...]
